The 7 Pitfalls of Remodeling
- Poor or incomplete planning.
Never start a remodel project until all the details have been decided and a final plan is specified, drawn out, and agreed upon with your contractor.
- Improper budgeting.
Make sure the final plan is completed and all items related to the project have been chosen and properly priced out, including all trade labor needed to complete the project. Know your own limitations when it comes to DIY projects.
- Lack of attention to detail.
Do not get lazy. In order to have a successful, beautiful end-product, completed in a timely manner, every detail counts and must be finalized before demolition begins.
- Poor preparation.
To prevent collateral damage, it’s important to properly protect the rest of the home from dust and damage. Don't make the project bigger and harder than it has to be.
- Not having all the materials.
Ordering all special-order materials early is extremely important; they should be in-hand and accounted for before the project is physically started. Never assume materials will arrive on time and undamaged.
- Not Choosing the right contractor the first time.
Do your homework, call references, visit current job sites if possible. Don’t let a handyman remodel your kitchen. Handymen are for small, odd jobs -- just as plumbers are for doing plumbing. Only hire professionals with a proven track record, accredited, insured, and checked out with the BBB.
- Not obtaining the proper permits.
Having all the necessary permits is crucial i.e. framing, electrical, plumbing etc., as well as having all inspections completed at the proper time. City and state inspectors are responsible for making sure your home remains safe; they are looking out for you and your family. Beware of contractors who shy away from proper inspections and permits. Getting caught without permits can result in substantial fines; you may even be required to re-open walls to have a proper inspection completed, prolonging your project rather than moving forward.
